This is from back in January – this is the only time over both rotations that I saw an avocet. Neat bird with an upside down bend in his bill. The snipe I saw last time, but didn’t notice it till I looked at the pics on the computer.

Hey all-
At least one correspondent out there asked about our recent “honored guest”…
We didn’t see him here, although he put in an appearance down in the IZ (the old “Green Zone”).
On the way in from Kuwait, he was also at MND-SE (Basra) where LTC Al Mategrano is working. Al is supposed to be up here running our Ops Section, but is on “TDY” in Basra on another mission.
Anyway, he got in on the Big Visit, and also received…yes, a Senator Obama Coin for Excellence. (ed. note: A what? This, maybe? Later That Same Day Update: That’s NOT the coin)

That’s Al just to the Senator’s left. The big machine they’re standing in front of is a Buffalo, one of our engineer route clearance vehicles. The cage is defense against RPGs, the big arm has a spork on it to interrogate IEDs. Some other stuff on there as well…
