Birds of Iraq

Posted in Birds of Iraq on April 9th, 2008 by Bigwig – 2 Comments

The latest from LTC Bob.

Sorry for the long break once again, has continued to be busy here. Weather has moderated a bit, temps in mid to upper 80s, dusty today and windy.

I’ve attached a couple more bird pics, the first two are what I think are a new species for me, the Spanish Sparrow. Quite similar to the English ones, but with an all brown cap (English has grey one) and the black striping on the breast and back.

It’s possible that they’re a hybridization of the two species, which does occur according to Birds of the Middle East.

The third one is on the Bird Lake, over on Camp Slayer, there are Ferruginous Ducks and Marbled Teal, both really pretty birds. I only saw four Marbled Teal last time, and never got even a decent photo of them. There are at least a dozen on the lake this time. The Ferruginous Ducks are new this trip.

So it was off to the Auto Haus we go…er, went. After a tiresome 15 whole minutes of shopping, we picked up a pickup.

This one, in fact.

Given my history of driving vehicles until I can see the road through the floorboards, this is my ride until 2017.

I only post because Mom enjoyed Engrish.com so much. Some delicate souls may consider this offensive.

Personally, I chortled.

Don’t say I didn’t warn ya’.

“cigarette-smoking ape with a club”

A naturalist is someone who is interested in and knows a lot about the natural world. An environmentalist is someone who hates people.

Environmental crusader Paul Watson says the deaths of at least three seal hunters last weekend north of Cape Breton are a tragedy, but the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of seal pups “is an even greater tragedy.”

Watson, head of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, was commenting on the capsizing Saturday of a Quebec-based trawler as it was being towed by a coast guard icebreaker on the second day of annual East Coast seal hunt.

Two men survived the sinking and another is missing an presumed drowned.

Watson issued a statement today that took aim at seal hunters, describing them as “baby killers” … “who are seeking sympathy because some of their own died.”

“One of the sealers was quoted as saying that he felt absolutely helpless as he watched the boat sink with sealers onboard,” Watson said in a statement released Wednesday.

“I can’t think of anything that defines helplessness and fear more than a seal pup on the ice that can’t swim or escape as it is approached by some cigarette-smoking ape with a club …. They are vicious killers.”

Today’s fortune cookie: “Patience is your alley at the moment. Don’t worry.”

I guess maybe I should throw out my garbage in it, or possibly use it as a urinal?
