Environmental crusader Paul Watson says the deaths of at least three seal hunters last weekend north of Cape Breton are a tragedy, but the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of seal pups “is an even greater tragedy.”
Watson, head of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, was commenting on the capsizing Saturday of a Quebec-based trawler as it was being towed by a coast guard icebreaker on the second day of annual East Coast seal hunt.
Two men survived the sinking and another is missing an presumed drowned.
Watson issued a statement today that took aim at seal hunters, describing them as “baby killers” … “who are seeking sympathy because some of their own died.”
“One of the sealers was quoted as saying that he felt absolutely helpless as he watched the boat sink with sealers onboard,” Watson said in a statement released Wednesday.
“I can’t think of anything that defines helplessness and fear more than a seal pup on the ice that can’t swim or escape as it is approached by some cigarette-smoking ape with a club …. They are vicious killers.”
