Ocean Tech

• Within three years, underwater turbine engines could begin harnessing the power of the Gulf Stream and begin producing commercial electricity.

• Within three to five years, deep-ocean cold water could begin to be used for commercial air conditioning.

• Within seven to 10 years, scientists could begin commercially harnessing the energy produced by the differences in ocean temperatures at various depths. They could begin producing hydrogen from the ocean as a fuel source.

I imagine the environmental hurdles for any of the above to be deployed in large enough amounts to actually be of use would be rather severe.

Just because you’ve got a problem doesn’t mean the Feds need to get involved.

Indeed, if the inlet’s woes sound familiar, it’s because they are. Nearly every year for a decade, local representatives have had to battle to get dredging funded. The federal government and many other politicians see shallow-draft inlets and similar coastal projects such as beach nourishment as local concerns.

Having to go seven miles out of your way is a local inconvenience, not a national crisis. Unless for some reason the Carolina Beach Inlet is integral to the functioning of the Intracoastal Waterway, which does not appear to be so, keeping it open shouldn’t fall to the Feds. If local businesses are the ones who stand to lose money, then local businesses should be the ones mitigating the risk, either by ponying up funds for keeping the inlets open or–horrors!–relocating closer to the resources they need to function successfully.
