Bedtime Vignette

Ngnat was tucked in tonight without her flashlight, which had broken earlier. Understandably, she was upset, flashlights being the very foundation of a proper after-bedtime experience.

I told her, when I was young, we didn’t have any fancy flashlights to fiddle with after bedtime.

“When I was young, if I wanted to read in bed, I had to squeeze a baby pig til light came out his nose. Sometimes, I’d squeeze so hard he’d pee down my arm.”

For some reason, this did not placate my daughter.

So I grabbed her arm and yelled “Squeeeeeeee!”

    Oh my god.

A flashlight is one of the required tools for making you child a reader, the other two tools being a pile of comic books and an early bedtime during the school year.
