Kehaar’s Weekend Update

Posted in Life of Kehaar on November 26th, 2006 by Kehaar – Be the first to comment

Let me start by saying that we don’t appear to have any comments in the MT database here at Silflay Hraka. I’m not sure exactly what’s going on, but we have no comments on any blog using MT. I’ll check into it but hope it will resolve itself soon.

I don’t have a lot of time to update as I have to be at the airport in just under an hour to pick up a friend of mine. I thought I’d touch on a couple of topics before taking off to complete that task.

First off, let me say “Bon Voyage” to Chuckie Tomato, former NCSU head football coach. According to Raleigh’s own News & Observer, an announcement on Chuckie’s future is to be made tonight. After finishing the season with seven straight losses, it’s tough to imagine any announcement being made that reaffirms Chuckie as State’s coach. A quick scan of the message boards over at The Wolfpacker reveals how delusional State fans truly are. Failed Miami coach Larry Coker and WF coach Jim Grobe are being mentioned as potential successors to Tomato. State fans would revolt if it were Larry Coker and they’re dreaming if they think Jim Grobe will leave WF for the job.

Speaking of Jim Grobe and WF, congratulations to WF on winning the Atlantic Division of the ACC for the right to face Georgia Tech for the ACC Championship. I know Icehole is beside himself with glee. Congrats, buddy. If WF makes it to the Peach Bowl, you have a place to stay. I’ll probably go to the Peach Bowl no matter which ACC team is selected. What the heck.

Lastly, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday. I spent almost the entire holiday playing “Lego Star Wars II ” with my five year-old nephew. The kid is a machine when it comes to video games, much like his father. I awoke every morning of my stay in Boston at around 8:00 a.m. to the strains of the Star Wars soundtrack and received short breaks from it only for meals. For the record, Lego Star Wars is a great game. Nephew Ethan’s favorite character in the game was “BoBo Fett” (accent on all syllables), though he also liked Darth Vader and the Emperor (or as those in Boston say “the Emperah”. Nephew is already dropping his Rs, much to my Southern chagrin.)

That’s it for the weekend update. Hope everyone had a great Turkey Day! More soon. – Kehaar

Carnival of the Vanities #218: The Thanksgiving Edition

Posted in Carnival of The Vanities on November 22nd, 2006 by Kehaar – 1 Comment

Okay, I have to resort to the InstaCarny format again this week. No time to read everything again. I do apologize. It is my intention to find time for this blog some time in the near future. The new job is keeping me busy as is getting settled in Atlanta. The good news is that everyone makes it into the Carnival of the Vanities again this week and there were a lot more entries than we’ve had in previous weeks. The bad news is that the Blog Carnival “instant” code is a nightmare and it doesn’t help that my editing PC went down with a bad hard drive last week. This means I’m on my laptop and the only editing software I have available to me are NotePad and MS Word. Don’t even get me started on how badly Word screws up a simple HTML export. For those of you who think I spent no time on this Carnival, please know I spent at least half an hour cleaning up the freaking code problems.

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving! I’m off for Boston for the holiday! Another Carny appears in this space next week. Enjoy the Carnival of the Vanities.

Kehaar’s Weekend Update

Posted in Life of Kehaar on November 18th, 2006 by Kehaar – Be the first to comment

Hola, compadres! Kehaar has returned. Did you miss me? Sure you did. Sorry for not being more on the ball as far as the blog is concerned, but it’s been a long week. I moved out of my condo in Greensboro last Friday, moved into my apartment in Atlanta on Saturday, started work on Monday, received all my stuff from the movers on Tuesday and spent the rest of the week exploring the area. So far I’ve gotten lost everywhere I’ve gone.

I got lost in the hallway of my apartment building the first time I walked into the place. I got lost trying to find the Target and the grocery store. I got lost trying to find Best Buy and the Home Depot. I got lost the first two days I went to work. The first time I got within a mile of the building and circled for half an hour. The second time I circled for 15 minutes. I also got lost on the way home from work the first two days. On Wednesday I drove straight to work. That’s the day I got stuck in the revolving door because I forgot to swipe my security card. That was pretty embarassing.

We have great security at work. I have to swipe my card to get into the building, at two different junctures. I take the elevator to the 8th floor and swipe my card to get into our offices. When I go to the bathroom, I have to swipe my card to get back into the offices. If I go to another floor, I have to swipe my card to get into the other floor. If I take the stairs, I have to swipe my card to get out of the stairwell. If I ever forget my security badge, I’m screwed.

Why all this security, you ask? Stalkers. We get ‘em. Lots of ‘em, evidently. The On-Air talent at The Weather Channel attracts all sorts of weather weirdos. Kinda’ like this blog.

Initial thoughts on work: I’m going to like it. The people are uniformly intelligent and motivated as far as I can tell and the office environment is fairly laid back even though everyone is very busy. That’s the main reason for no bloggage this past week. I have no time for it even though I’m the new guy and I’ve been there for only five days.

Some improvements over my previous workplace: the cafeteria, holidays and free, bottomless coffee in the breakroom. The first day I went to the breakroom I looked around for the coffee donation container. I couldn’t find one. We used to have to bring our own coffee and then make it ourselves. Now I come in around 8:15 every morning and there are three pots of coffee waiting for me. I drink my first cup and head back half an hour later. More coffee. And it’s all free.

I spend the rest of the day quivering from the caffeine overdose.

The cafeteria is also an improvement. They have a selection of five different entrees for lunch every day and at least one is a healthy choice. Finally I can get a healthy meal without having to leave the building! They also have an ATM so I don’t have to remember to bring cash every day. That’s good because I have no idea how to find the Bank of America around here.

We also apparently get extra holidays. I’ve been back and forth with the HR folks all week to make sure my vacation days transferred properly. I wanted to use one of those days to take off the day after Thanksgiving so I could fly to Boston to see Black Sheep and his family. I spent hours chasing this around only to find out that we get the day after Thanksgiving off anyway. As if that wasn’t enough, they also close the office at 3:00 p.m. the day before Thanksgiving so we can all get out of there. Apparently we also get the day after Christmas as a holiday. I can now roll over 5 extra vacation days until next year. I’m in heaven.

Other thoughts about Atlanta: the traffic is bad but not unbearable. The commute to work is about 30 minutes with about half of that spent in heavy traffic. The commute home is 20 minutes. I guess I miss the big rush hour on the way home or something. I dealt with worse traffic coming back from Best Buy an hour ago than I do going to work.

I think that’s it for now. I thought I had more to say when I started this but I seem to be losing steam. I’ll try to post more tomorrow, maybe when the delivery guys show up with my brand new Frigidaire front-loading washer and dryer from Best Buy.

Until then, thanks for stopping in!

Take a step back in time…

Carnival of the Vanities #217: InstaCarny!

Posted in Carnival of The Vanities on November 15th, 2006 by Kehaar – 1 Comment

Welcome to the 217th edition of Carnival of the Vanities. I apologize in advance but I have no time to edit the Carnival this week. The last week has been crazy. Last day of my old job was Thursday, moved out of my condo on Friday, drove to Atlanta on Saturday, started the new job on Monday and received my furniture, clothes, etc. from the movers on Tuesday evening. No time to read all the entries or edit anything this week. I’m also borrowing a wireless signal from an unsuspecting neighbor because I don’t get my cable hooked up until next Monday. All this means that I’m basically going to post the Instant Carnival produced by Blog Carnival. That means everyone who submitted this week gets in. Good for you.

Oh, and before I forget, Wayne Hurlbert doesn’t use Blog Carnival. Here’s his submission.

I hope you enjoy the writing contained within, from a variety of superb blog authors (and a couple of published authors too). Here is a description of the post for easy reading:

“The Oxford English Dictionary defines a time-capsule as “a container used to store for posterity a selection of [entities] thought to be representative of life at a particular time.” With this is mind, we thought it might be interesting to assemble our own time-capsule and, this being the web-lead information age, bury that capsule online, in an enormous web-garden.

What ideas will future generations glance back at and laugh in contemptuous hindsight? In 50 years time which contemporary cultural memes will be deader than the proverbial Dodo? Lying in the digital darkness of our internet time-capsule these questions, and more, will have to wait 50 years of technological shifts; of societal upheavals; of cultural fermentation before they can be answered.”

Thursday’s UNC Coaching Links

Winston-Salem Journal: Winston-Salem Journal | UNC, Davis have deal: Three sources say he’ll be Tar Heels’ next football coach.

News & Observer: Davis, Heels deal not done yet

Charlotte Observer: Davis, Heels to continue negotiations.

Carolina Blue and Inside Carolina continue to say it’s a done deal. Furthermore, both are suggesting that Mike Paulus is reconfirming his commitment to UNC and Greg Little is set to announce for UNC over Notre Dame today. If true, that seems to suggest that UNC has indeed hired a coach.

More:

And the most insightful look at the whole thing from the place I should’ve looked first: David Glenn’s ACC Journal. Regarding Butch Davis…

Update: I am not a member at InsideCarolina.com, but they have a headline reporting that WR Greg Little has chosen Notre Dame over UNC. No real surprise there except to some individuals on the CarolinaBlue.com message boards!
