BEIRUT, Lebanon - A peaceful flag-burning and rock-throwing march was marred by violence today when a riot erupted behind the Beirut Quik-E-Mart, Islam’s 17th holiest site. Fifteen Muslim protesters were killed and dozens were injured when an apparent disagreement between marchers erupted into a free-for-all.
“I do not know how screaming hateful slogans and burning flags could have turned into this,” wept an unnamed marcher.
Official reports are pending, but a witness, who went only my the name “Mo”, described the scene:
“It began as a good day. We were protesting the cartoon representations of the prophet Muhammad, and calling for death to America and Israel. Multitasking, really. Omar burned a Danish flag, and CNN got it on tape. Big win there. Abdul was practicing his stone throwing for next year’s Haaj. He’s got a curveball that looks like it’s falling off a table. The Yankees and Mariners have scouts booking rooms for next Ramadan.
“So we’re praying behind the Quik-E-Mart. Things are going well. And someone says, ‘You know. We all pretty much look like Muhammad.’
“Then it hit the fan.”
