I just want to say a short word of thanks for those I served with, and those who came after me and those who came before, and especially to those who gave all so that I could give very little, and so that most could get by with giving nothing at all.
First, to my family. They didn’t give their all, though they tried damn hard, repeatedly. I owe much to them. The men in my family serve. That’s what we do. Yes, we’re Scots and Irish, so maybe we come by it naturally as James Webb would argue, maybe we just like a good fight. Regardless, a long line of men in my family, especially on my Dad’s side, set the example I have hoped to live by.
