Note to our friends in the Islamic world: Don’t believe everything you read in the MSM, and especially don’t run out and kill people when you read wild allegations. We don’t because they often turn out to be false, or malicious, or maliciously false - malalse, if you will. (That neologism is my tribute to the greatest compound word of all time - traveshamockery.) What’s the first indicator that the Newsweek story about U.S. troops desecrating the Koran was false? That’s easy… it was in Newsweek. Powerline has a pretty good handle on the whys & wherefores of Newsweek’s screwup. For it’s part, Newsweek says they had a shaky source talking about the alleged abuses of the Koran, which in fact appear to be a reference to an Al Qaida operative using pages torn from the Koran to plug up a toilet, as a way of protesting confinement at Gitmo. Oops, sorry. Newsweek responds by saying “but wait, there’s a lot more unfounded allegations. Here’s some of them…” followed by a laundry list of the more egregiously implausible ones. Newsweek is trying hard to protect its reputation here, but the fact is, they went with rumors, and a bunch of people got killed in the subsequent riots. But I’ll give Pentagon spokesman Larry Derita, commenting on the source of Newsweek’s allegation, the final word here:

“People are dead because of what this son of a bitch said. How could he be credible now?”
