Yesterday, a search on the words “Kerry” and “affair” at Google News returned something like 12 results.

Today it returned 597.

If the number shrinks in the coming days, then Kerry’s dimissal of the story this morning may have been all that was needed to put the story to rest.

If, on the other hand the number of stories continues to grow, then the story hasn’t died. Kerry’s probably lucky this story broke near the end of the week. People tend not to pay as much attention to the news over the weekend. Of course, if Time Magazine actually is prepping a story on a Kerry affair, as this Clark-related weblog claimed last week, then a slow news weekend won’t matter at all in the long run.

Update: Bill Quick detects the hand of a Clinton in the way the story came about. If so, then these numbers will do nothing but grow. The Clintons know how to keep a story simmering. If “new details” come out in the next few days it’s sure to be the sign of an experienced media manipulator at work. At that point Hill and BIll are as good a choice as anyone.

If you’re going to link exchange-spam me, you might at least attempt to get the url of my site right.

Hi. I was very impressed with your site (http://www.asmallvictory.net/). It’s very well written, and I think I’ll be a regular reader from now on.

Anyway, down to business. I am just returning to the blogging world after a 6 month absence, and I’m looking to rebuild my link network. I have recently moved my site (http://www.worldwarbush.com)* to Blogger, and am attempting to bring it back up to date.

I would like to discuss the possiblity of a link exchange between our sites. I would place your link in a prominent position (right sidebar, large font at top of page) in return for a link on your front page. I have started to build up my readership again, and am at present receiving about 100 visitors a day (about 250 hits). I expect this to increase to around 400 a day within a month or two (this reflects my readership figures as of last spring). My page rank of 4/10 has been temporarily removed due to the move, but should be restored as soon as the site is spidered by Google.

If you would be interested in my proposal I can be reached at this e-mail address. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely, Keith Taylor.

It strikes me that someone somewhere has a bunch of blogger emails and sites in two files, and is combining the two as part of a spam run. This time, though, one of the files didn’t increment correctly, so that Michele’s letter was sent to me, and mine went to someone else. I wonder whom? If the files are alphabetized, then “Small Victory” comes just after “Silflay Hraka,” implying that the blog just before me on the list got the linkage appeal intended for Bigwig.

I still don’t understand the business logic behind link-spamming, unless someone thinks they can sell advertising on their site based on the number of incoming links.
